Senator Al Gore spoke to reporters about the military air attack by U.S. and allied forces against Iraq for the liberation of Kuwait which had begun the previous evening. Senator Gore said the U.S. was over the hurdle of having to react to a preemptive strike by Iraq against Israel, which would polarize the coalition of allied and Arab states between fighting Saddam Hussein and supporting Israel. He also said that the initial attack appeared to be successful in injuring a great deal of Hussein’s offense, and the country was overwhelmingly behind the allied armed forces in the Middle East. Senator Gore also stressed the need for a plan for the Middle East following the conflict, including an international regime for controlling the flow of nuclear and chemical warfare technology into the region. close
