John Sayles and Barbara Kingsolver discussed connections between writing and politics. The writers have been corresponding with one another for 10 years but this was the first time they have ever met. The writers talked about the double standard in the perception of American writing and argue that only in the U.S. are conservative writers viewed as authors while liberal writers are coined political writers. The panelists entertained questions from the audience throughout the discussion.

The event coincided with the release of Sayles' newest film, Silver City, and a collection of his screenplays, Silver City and Other Screenplays, from Nation Books. Ms. Kingsolver’s books include Small Wonder: Essays, published by HarperCollins, and Last Stand: America’s Virgin Lands, published by National Geographic. close
