Pax Christi U.S.A. is an organization of religious leaders opposed to the Persian Gulf war on religious grounds. Their members consider the war to be an affront to God, and call for an immediate end to the hostilities without the inflexibility of an unconditional surrender. The speakers protested the U.S. and Iraq’s decision to resort to war, and called for U.S. participation in a peace conference on the Middle East. Ms. Chittister stressed the discrepancy between the enormous financial outlays needed for the U.S. attack against Iraq and the decreasing financial support for the economically disadvantaged in the U.S. close
