A book discussion group considered Elizabeth Keckley’s 1868 book Behind the Scenes, Or, Thirty Years a Slave and Four Years in the White House, published by Oxford University Press. The book is a narrative describing the life of a slave in 19th century America. Keckley was a slave who purchased her freedom in 1855 and worked as a seamstress for Mrs. Jefferson Davis and eventually for Mary Todd Lincoln in the White House. close
