Bush (R-TX) and Vice President Al Gore met at the University of Massachusetts Boston for the first of three presidential debates prior to the 2000 presidential election. The candidates stood at separate podia and answered questions selected by moderator Jim Lehrer. The agreed upon rules allowed closing statements but not opening statements. The candidates did not question each other directly but were able to respond to each other’s statements. Much of the debate focused on Social Security and tax cuts but included questions on Yugoslavia, Supreme Court justices, abortion, and education. The audience consisted of candidate supporters and guests of the commission sponsors.
