Department of Defense representatives spoke to reporters in the Pentagon on events in the Persian Gulf war. On day eight of the hostilities in the Gulf, the U.S. had over 478,000 military personnel in the region, and had lost fourteen personnel in action. Of twenty-two SCUD missiles launched by Iraq towards Saudi Arabia, four hit their targets; of thirteen SCUD missiles launched towards Israel, eight have landed. Major General Brandtner said Saddam Hussein’s air power continues to deteriorate under U.S. and allied air fire, and reaffirmed that civilian targets were not being bombed. Mr. Williams announced the total number of Iraqi aircraft destroyed to be 41, including 19 shot down in flight. He also said allied military commanders in northern Saudi Arabia had been instructed to stay on the lookout for a four man CBS news crew which had last been heard from on the twenty-first. Their car had been found abandoned just south of Kuwait in a combat no-man’s-land. close
