Former Attorney General Thornburgh (1988-1991) introduced Mr. Olson. Mr. Olson discussed his book, The Rule of Lawyers: How the New Litigation Elite Threatens America’s Rule of Law, published by Truman Talley Books. Mr. Olson contended that the use of class action suits by private lawyers is out of control. He asserted that excessive settlements from lawsuits against the producers of tobacco, asbestos, automobiles and breast implants are inflicting damage on the nation’s economy. He also said that lawyers receive large fees for themselves, relatively small awards for their clients, and drive entire segments of business into bankruptcy. A question and answer period followed Mr. Olson’s remarks. close
