Mr. Williams briefed reporters on events in the Persian Gulf, including the huge and growing oil slick in the Persian Gulf being fed from tankers and pipelines from refineries in Kuwait. The president assembled a team of environmental scientists to travel to the Persian Gulf to advise the Saudi Arabians on methods of containing and cleaning up the huge slick. Major General Brandtner said three Iraq MIG fighters were shot down in a dogfight over Iraq, bringing the total number of Iraqi aircraft shot down to twenty-two. He responded to Saddam Hussein’s charge that the U.S. military was targeting religious sites by saying the U.S. attack did not target any civilian targets, religious or otherwise. Neither Major General Brandtner nor Admiral McConnell would state what option the U.S. military was considering in response to the growing oil slick. However, they indicated the U.S. military would do something, and the oil slick would not have an effect upon military operations. Admiral McConnell said a dozen fighter jets and a dozen transport planes had been found in Iran. Further information on the planes was being assembled at the time of the briefing. close
