Mr. Salman spoke to reporters on the huge and growing oil slick in the Persian Gulf being fed from pipelines and tankers in Kuwait. The gigantic slick, created nearly a week earlier by Iraqi forces in Kuwait, threatened wildlife and sealife on a monumental scale along the coast of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. The volume of the slick was unavailable at the time of the briefing. The Saudis were attempting to implement contingency plans to battle the oil slick, which Mr. Salman said was one of the largest spills in history. The effects of the spill would be felt for a long time after the spill itself was contained from growing. On Sunday, U.S. warplanes bombed the oil installations along the coast that were feeding the slick in an attempt to stem the flow of oil into the Gulf. The success of their efforts were unknown immediately. close
