Mr. Linklater talked about his book Measuring America: How an Untamed Wilderness Shaped the United States and Fulfilled the Promise of Democracy, published by Walker and Co. The book explains the role of Thomas Jefferson in the creation of the American system of measurement. Mr. Linklater discussed how the U.S. was orignially mapped and surveyed to create a system of private property, and how this system makes it extremely difficult, even today, for the U.S. to convert to the metric system. He also talks about the negative impact of this transformation from communal to private property on the American Indians. Mr. Linklater answered questions from members of the audience following his talk. close
