Mr. Williams and the military representatives spoke to reporters on the thirteenth day of the hostilities in the Persian Gulf. Lt. General Kelly announced the previous evening’s two SCUD missile attacks from Iraq which were destroyed midflight by Patriot missiles. Captain Herrington described the scope of the oil slick in the Persian Gulf, which was thirty-five miles long and ten miles across. The huge oil slick had yet to reach the coastline of Saudi Arabia or Kuwait; the photographs of dying cormorants and other wildlife were from a second oil slick created when Iraqi fighters bombed an oil refinery on the Saudi Arabian coast. General Kelly said that the numerous Iraqi jet fighters flying into Iran were to remain in Iran until the end of the war, according to Iranian assurances. However, General Kelly left it open whether Iraq and Iran were involved in a secret deal to protect Iraq’s air force. close
