Mr. Osterman discussed his book Gathering Power: The Future of Progressive Politics in America, published by Beacon Press. He believes grass roots activism is partly responsible for the resurgence in voter turnout among those who previously did not vote. The book examines the Industrial Areas Foundation, an organization designed to promote local activism and increase Democratic voter turnout. Mr. Osterman believes that religious values are playing an increasing role in American politics and advocates faith-based programs supporting liberal ends and follows the model of Valley Interfaith. It’s a progressive multiracial coalition based in the Rio Grande Valley which brings together Latino residents to improve their community. After the presentation the author answered questions from members of the audience. close
