President George H.W. Bush, congressional leaders, and academics spoke at a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of President Franklin Roosevelt’s "4 Freedoms Speech". President Roosevelt’s 4 Freedom speech was delivered on January 6, 1941. Arthur Schlesinger spoke on the historical events surrounding the composition and delivery of the speech, and Anne Eleanor Roosevelt, connected her grandfather’s descriptions of the freedoms the U.S. fought for in World War II with the freedom to dissent from supporting the Persian Gulf war. Senator Bob Dole, R-KS described his injuries in battle during World War II and said we must ensure the continuation of the Four Freedoms for all Americans. Representative Richard Gephardt, D-MO, emphasized FDR’s resolution despite media attacks, and Representative Tom Foley, D-WA, compared FDR’s state of the union speech with President Bush’s state of the union address. President Bush spoke on the inspiration and legacy of the Four Freedoms. close
