Mr. Murphy discussed his book Wild Bill: The Legend and Life of William O. Douglas, America’s Most Controversial Supreme Court Justice, published by Random House. Justice Douglas was the second youngest judge to serve on the high court and stayed on the bench for the longest duration. Professor Murphy argues that the legend of Douglas differs greatly from reality and that Douglas' memoirs are largely fabricated. He talked specifically about Douglas' claims that he had polio as a child, that he grew up poor, that he served in France during WWI, and that he had little interest in becoming president. Professor Murphy also talked about Douglas' career as a Supreme Court justice and his eventual move towards libertarianism. Mr. Swanson provided commentary. Following their presentations they answered questions from members of the audience. close
