Mr. Sasser, chairman of the Senate Budget committee, and Mr. Panetta, chairman of the House Budget committee, spoke to reporters at a press conference to assess the recently submitted Bush administration budget proposal. Mr. Sasser found the budget to be a step in the right direction for budget making, away from the harmful financial spending policies of the 1980's. Mr. Panetta assessed the budget to be a favorable sign amongst the U.S.' current financial woes and the Persian Gulf war’s demand upon our economy, but problems in the American infrastructure have not been taken into account by the budget makers. Both men, however, rejected a number of the cutbacks in the system, such as cuts in Medicare benefits and education. close
