Mr. Williams, Lt. Gen. Kelly and Capt. Herrington spoke to reporters on events in the Persian Gulf war. Mr. Williams announced the upcoming visit of Chief of Staff Colin Powell and Secretary of Defense Richard Cheney to Saudi Arabia upon the request of the president to survey the situation of the U.S. armed forces firsthand. Lt. Gen. Kelly discussed the numbers of the war, including Iraqi SCUD missile attacks, air sorties, aircraft losses, Iraqi defections, and so on. He warned that the Iraqi military had the capability to launch chemical weapons against the U.S. troops, but said the U.S. was confident that the troops would be able to overcome a chemical attack. He also said the Iraqi leadership would be held responsible for the use of chemical weapons. close
