City on Fire Mr. Minutaglio talked about his book City on Fire: The Forgotten Story of a Disaster That Destroyed a Town and the Landmark Legal Battle That Ensued, published by HarperCollins. The book tells the story behind Texas City, Texas, where companies converted ammonium nitrate into fertilizer for European countries during post-WW II nation-rebuilding. On April 6, 1947, an explosion killed hundreds of Texas City’s citizens. After a nation-wide relief effort and investigation emerged the first lawsuit was filed against the United States government for gross negligence. It accused the country’s political leaders of failing to alert citizens about the explosive nature of ammonium nitrate, a chemical agent used in World War II. After the presentation the author answered questions from members of the audience. close
