Dr. Stephen Ochs discussed his book A Black Patriot and a White Priest: Andre Cailloux and Claude Paschal Maistre in Civil War New Orleans, published by Louisiana State University Press. Dr. Ochs examines the intersection between the lives of the first black Civil War hero and a white Catholic supporter of abolishing slavery. He uses the relationship between the two men to cast light on the social and political life of New Orleans during the Civil War era. Dr. Ochs illustrated his presentation with slides. He also answered questions from members of the audience. close
