Lamar Alexander, Governor of Tennessee from 1979 to 1986, testified before the Senate Labor & Human Resources Committee on his views and policies concerning education. The former secretary of education, Lauro Cavazos, resigned in January, under pressure from President H.W. Bush for failing to support President Bush’s pledge during the 1988 campaign to be the “education president.” Some of Mr. Alexander’s proposals for the future of the United States' education policy included continued education for adults, new schools and new educational programs for current and future vocational needs, and newer schools, where parents would want to send their children. close
