Gao Xingjian discussed his novel Soul Mountain, published by HarperCollins, for which he was the first recipient to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature for writing in Chinese. Professor Shih interviewed Mr. Gao while Professor Lee served as translator. The book was written resulting from an incident over twenty years ago when the author was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. A second examination revealed no signs of cancer. Feeling he was reprieved from death, Gao Xingjian decided to embark on a spiritual journey that led him 12,000 miles across China. Mr. Gao also spoke of his life since he was exiled from China in1987 and went to live in Paris as a political refugee. He also answered questions from the audience. close
