Author Jedediah Purdy speaks to his book Being America: Liberty, Commerce, and Violence in an American World, published by Alfred. A. Knopf. Mr. Purdy’s book looks at the way people around the world perceive America and the ways that American capitalism and culture shape the world. He also considers the concepts of globalization, liberalism, and modernity. During the talk, he read a passage from his book concerning conversations he had with people in Egypt who had, at the same time, an appreciation for both the United States and Osama bin Laden. After his presentation he answered questions from members of the audience. close
