Jonathon Spence discussed his book Treason By the Book, published by Viking. The book looks at an 18th century conspiracy by Chinese school teachers against their Manchu emperor. The emperor made a book about the case, including the records of the conspirators. Professor Spence explained the unique aspects of Chinese culture that fostered such factionalism and tensions between royalty and the scholars, and how their tradition of recording these historic moments yielded an immense paper archive upon which Mr. Spence based his book. After his presentation, he answered questions from members of the audience. close
