Winners for the publishing year 2000, announced during this program, were: Ted Conover, author of Newjack: Guarding Sing Sing, for General Nonfiction; Cynthia Ozick, author of Quarrel and Quandary, for Criticism; Judy Jordan, author of Carolina Ghost Woods, for Poetry; Herbert Bix, author of Hirohito and the Making of Modern Japan, for Biography/Autobiography; Jim Crace, author of Being Dead, for Fiction. Daniel Mendelsohn received the Nona Balakian Citation for Excellence in Book Reviewing and Barney Rosset received the Ivan Sandrof Lifetime Achievement Award. Acceptance speeches by Mr. Bix and Mr. Crace were read by their editors. close
