Dr. Paquette introduced the authors of books on World War II. General J. Kemp McLaughlin is a retired US Air Force general who wrote The Mighty Eighth in World War II, published by University Press of Kentucky, based on his memories of World War II. Joseph Scalia was the next speaker to discuss his book, Germany’s Last Mission to Japan: The Failed Voyage of U-234 published by the United States Naval Institute. This latest model submarine was carrying a special cargo and personnel to Japan when Germany surrendered. The author describes the voyage and its significance and the importance of submarines during this era in history. Captain Kenneth Beyer (Ret.) discussed his book Q-Ships Versus U-Boats: America’s Secret Project, published by the United States Naval Institute, where he describes the transformation of these merchant ships into heavily armed naval machines. He describes their battles and the German submariners who battled against them. The author also spoke about the Q-ship that was lost at sea during the war. After the prepared remarks the authors answered questions from members of the audience. close
