Peter Edelman talked about his book Searching for America’s Heart: RFK and the Renewal of Hope, published by Houghton Mifflin. The book is about the evolution of American liberalism from RFK’s heyday in the 1960s to the prosperity of the 1990s. Mr. Edelman talked about the current economic and social condition of the poor since the 1996 welfare reform bill was signed by former President Bill Clinton. Mr. Edelman cited anecdotes gathered from his cross-country travels investigating the legacy of welfare reform and offered his view on how the poverty level can be permanently reduced. He also addressed the general state of the Democratic Party. After his remarks he answered questions from members of the audience. The program ends abruptly. close
