Mr. Robeson talked about his biography of his father, The Undiscovered Paul Robeson: The Early Years, 1898-1939, published by John Wiley and Sons. Paul Robeson was considered one of the world’s most famous actors from the 1920s through the 1950s. He was the third African-American admitted to Rutgers University, received a law degree from Columbia University, pursued a professional football career, and performed the title role in the film version of The Emperor Jones and on stage in Shakespeare’s Othello. Paul Robeson, Jr. feels his father’s current obscurity is due to the negative public response to his outspoken left-wing politics. He also believes that the media campaign waged during the McCarthy era labeled his father a Communist and caused him to be blacklisted from 1949 until his death in 1976.
