Alene Stein discussed her book The Stranger Next Door: The Story of a Small Community’s Battle over Sex, Faith, and Civil Rights, published by Beacon Press. The book is about a small Oregon town that became divided in the 1990s about the gay rights issue. Ms. Stein talked about the social differences in the town, and also about action groups that stimulated community concerns led and to ballot initiatives about gay rights. After her presentation she answered questions from members of the audience. close
