Patsy Clarke and Eloise Vaughn talked about their book Keep Singing: Two Mothers, Two Sons, and Their Fight Against Jesse Helms, published by Alyson Publications. Patsy Clarke and Eloise Vaughn both lost a son to AIDS. Ms. Clarke had written a letter asking Senator Jesse Helms (R-NC) to change his opposition to AIDS research. When the senator’s reply did not seem to be sympathetic to their situation, the two women formed Mothers Against Jesse in Congress (MAJIC) to oppose his 1996 re-election to congress. Their group gained national attention. Allan Gurganus, who wrote the forward to the book, introduced the authors and Nicole Brodeur, who assisted with the book, also spoke. Other mothers in their group were introduced at this event. Following their remarks, the authors answered questions from members of the audience.

Allan Gurganus is the author of Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All, published by Vintage. close
