Actor Derek Evans depicted the life of the nation’s 26th president, Theodore Roosevelt. Mr. Evans discussed President Roosevelt’s parents and his battle with asthma in his youth. He also discussed his years living in the Dakotas and return to New York state to serve in politics. Afterward he talked about his service in the Spanish-American War, rise to the presidency, and accomplishments in office. Then, Mr. Evans read to an audience of children from Kenneth Grahame’s book The Wind in the Willows, which President Roosevelt read to his children. Mr. Evans also read from the book written by Gary Hines and illustrated by Alexandra Wallner, A Christmas Tree in the White House, published by Henry Holt & Company. This book is loosely based on an occasion when President Roosevelt refused to allow his family to have a Christmas tree until he learned that it would not conflict with his conservation program. close
