Witnesses testified at this Senate Judiciary Committee hearing about the status of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and its plans for the future. Current FBI Director at the time, Louis Freeh, who was to retire the following July, was unable to appear. The Committee intended to improve the public image of the FBI, which had suffered setbacks in the past few years. Senator John Danforth was a former independent council and William Webster was a former director of the FBI from 1978 to 1987. close
