Mr. Woodson talked about his book, A President in the Family: Thomas Jefferson, Sally Hemings, and Thomas Woodson, published by Praeger Publishers. The book is about his family’s lineage resulting from the relationship between former President Thomas Jefferson and his slave Sally Hemings. Mr. Woodson gave his family’s oral history, passed from generation to generation, about Thomas Woodson, the first son of President Jefferson and Ms. Hemings. Thomas Woodson was born in 1790, left the Jefferson plantation, Monticello, at the age of 12, and ended up as a farm owner in Ohio. There are two historical family sources who tell the same story, which Mr. Woodson said lends it credibility. Mr. Woodson also provides the history of three of the seven children he says Ms. Hemings and President Jefferson had, as well as the history of two of Thomas Woodson’s eleven children. Mr. Woodson said some of the Jeffersonian historians have disputed the intimate relationship between President Jefferson and Ms. Hemings, saying that oral history cannot be trusted. Mr. Woodson and his wife Trena took questions at the end of the program from members of the audience. close
