Mr. Markle talked about his book, Spies and Spymasters in the Civil War, published by Hippocrene Books. He talked about the use of aerial photography, the telegraph, wire-tapping, and code breaking, some of which were used for the first time for the purpose of spying during the U.S. Civil War. Mr. Markle talked about the contributions and biographies of specific Civil War spies, saying that many of the spies were lawyers, actors, women, and blacks, none of whom had received prior training. He took questions at the end of the program from members of the audience. close
