Mr. Winschel talked about his book, Triumph & Defeat: The Vicksburg Campaign, published by Savas Publishing. The book orients the reader to the geographic region of Vicksburg, Mississippi, and provides detailed descriptions of the area, as well as asserting its importance to the unity of the country leading up to and following the defeat of the Confederacy. Vicksburg was the central point between two Confederate camps, the troops using the area as a supply post for receiving food, clothing, artillery, and new recruits. Mr. Winschel said President Abraham Lincoln believed that by obtaining the land of Vicksburg, the Union would hold the key to ending the Civil War. Mr. Winschel is also the author of Vicksburg: Fall of the Confederate Gibraltar. There was no question-and-answer session. close
