The National Academy of Sciences released a report on automobile fuel economy standards that was undertaken at the request of Congress and prepared by committee of experts. Paul Portney, chairman of the committee, said the report did not recommend any changes in fuel economy standards, but simply reported the kinds of tradeoffs that would be necessary to have better fuel economy, such as new technology vs. decreased safety and higher prices of automobiles. After their prepared remarks the participants answered media questions. close
