Professor Robert Remini discussed his book, Andrew Jackson and His Indian Wars, published by Viking Press. The book is about the former president and his relationship with Native Americans during his lifetime. The author discussed Jackson’s history during the American Revolution and his life on the then-dangerous frontier where he was appointed to protect colonists' land and to uphold Indian treaties. He described Jackson’s battle victories in Louisiana and Florida where the Indians lost millions of acres to the colonists. When Jackson became president, he began the implementation of the Indian Removal Act of 1830, and Native Americans' relocation west of the Mississippi River. Professor Remini suggested that Jackson saved these tribes by convincing them to move West, and they are still in existence today. He took questions at the end of the program from members of the audience. close
