The Wild Blue Speaking at Millard North High School, historian Stephen Ambrose talked about his new book, The Wild Blue: The Men and Boys Who Flew B-24s Over Germany, published by Simon and Schuster. The book centers on the pilot, crew and squadron of a B-24 bomber named the Dakota Queen. The pilot was then 22-year-old George McGovern, future U.S. Senator and 1972 Democratic presidential candidate. According to Mr. Ambrose, the B-24 was not easy to fly. It had a thin aluminum skin which made it airworthy but susceptible to attack from ground-based enemy gunfire. The crews suffered a casualty rate of fifty percent. The book is based on interviews with the surviving members of the 455th Bomb Group and unpublished memoirs and letters. close
