Michael D’Orso talks about his book Plundering Paradise: The Hand of Man on the Galapagos Islands, published by HarperCollins. The book talks about the natural world of the Galapogos Islands and its relatively new relationship with the human world. The islands, approximately 600 miles off the western coast of Ecuador, are where Charles Darwin conducted his evolutionary research in the 1830s. The islands have seen large-scale change since that time. The first immigrants to the Galapagos Islands were Norwegian settlers and fishermen who came over by the handful in the early 1900s. By the year 2000 the island had tourists, automobiles, 20,000 inhabitants on 3% of the land, and problems with poaching, pollution, and overfishing. Now the island battles corrupt and violent fishing fleets, corrupt judges and politicians, and Asian black marketeers. During the presentation the author showed slides from his trips to the Galapagos Islands and talked about the people he had met or heard stories about during his stay. These include Jack Nelson, an American who has lived there since 1967, the Norwegian fishermen who initially settled on the island, and other visitors-turned-inhabitants living on the Galapagos. close
