Lt. Gen. Thomas Kelly and Admiral Michael McConnell briefed reporters in the Pentagon on events in the Persian Gulf war. Lt. Gen. Kelly reported the daily war statistics, noting the absence of air sorties by the Iraqi air force, which he said would suffer as a result of the layoff in pilot combat experience. Lt. Gen. Kelly also reported on a U.S. patrol’s engagement with Iraqi forces, which resulted in destruction of a U.S. military vehicle but no U.S. casualties. Another engagement between U.S. and Iraqi troops resulted in one U.S. casualty, seven U.S. personnel wounded and several U.S. vehicles damaged; five Iraqi tanks were destroyed in the hostilities. He also announced the mass defection of 500 Iraqi soldiers following the destruction of 13 to 15 bunkers in an attack on Iraqi forces by U.S. aircraft. close
