Senators Gore and Wirth spoke to reporters in response to the Bush administration’s National Energy Strategy energy policy which was released earlier in the day in a news conference by the Secretary of the Department of Energy James Watkins. Senator Gore criticized the new policy, saying it increased the country’s dependence on foreign oil supplies. He characterized the bill as being a “bad joke,” and a “throwback” to the days when the U.S. solved its energy problems by burning more oil. Senator Wirth found the proposal “short on vision and short on strategy,” saying the bill was unacceptable in terms of the four principles that should guide a long term energy policy: conservation, environment, national interests, and the understanding that the U.S. cannot “produce its way out of this” problem. close
