Senator Gore criticized the new policy, saying it increased the country’s dependence on foreign oil supplies. He characterized the bill as being a “bad joke,” and a “throwback” to the days when the U.S. solved its energy problems by burning more oil. Senator Wirth found the proposal “short on vision and short on strategy,” saying the bill was unacceptable in terms of the four principles that should guide a long term energy policy: conservation, environment, national interests, and the understanding that the U.S. cannot “produce its way out of this” problem.
