Mr. Williams, Lt. Gen. Kelly and Adm. McConnell briefed reporters in the Pentagon on events in the Persian Gulf war. Earlier in the day, the deadline set by President Bush on Friday, February 22, of twelve noon the following day for Saddam Hussein to begin an unconditional withdrawal from Kuwait had passed without incident. Mr. Williams said “a turning point” had been reached in the campaign, refusing to speculate on when a ground attack by coalition troops into Iraq and Kuwait may start or whether General Schwarzkopf, head of the U.S. armed forces in Saudi Arabia, had the authority to launch the ground attack. Lt. Gen. Kelly gave the statistics of the Persian Gulf war, and Admiral McConnell described the destruction of the oil wells currently underway by Iraqi forces in Kuwait. close
