Mr. Dean talked about his book, The Rehnquist Choice: The Untold Story of the Nixon Appointment That Redefined the Supreme Court, published by The Free Press. Mr. Dean, White House counsel for the Nixon administration, said that the decision to nominate Mr. Rehnquist as an associate justice in 1971 was a rushed and somewhat haphazard affair. William Rehnquist has been chief justice since 1986 and most recently presided over the Clinton impeachment trial and wrote the majority opinion in Bush v. Gore. Mr. Dean served as White House counsel for President Nixon. After his presentation he answered questions from members of the audience. close
