Ms. Carbone talked about her children’s book, Storm Warriors, published by Knopf Books for Young Readers, with an audience of sixth-graders from Hardy School. The ‘Storm Warriors’ were the only all-African-American crew from the U.S. Life Saving Service in the late 1800s. The U.S. Life Saving Service joined with the Revenue Cutter Service in 1915 to become the U.S. Coast Guard. The author compared the techniques that were used by the crew to rescue ships in distress with the techniques that are used by the Coast Guard today. She also told stories of other rescues that she discovered while doing research for the book, and discussed the medal that was awarded to the crew 100 years later. close
