In his second major address to the nation since the September 11 terrorist attacks, President Bush spoke to an audience of about 5,000 police officers, firefighters and postal service employees, who rose for standing ovations frequently. The president talked about how life has changed in the U.S. since the September 11 terrorist attacks and about the nation’s resolve to battle terrorism at home and abroad. He said that progress was being made in Afghanistan and domestically. He encouraged Americans to be alert, not fearful, and asked that the public to make “a commitment to service in our own communities.” The president shook hands with some members of the audience as he left the stage. close
