Mr. Korda discussed his newest book, Making the List: A Cultural History of the American Bestseller 1900-1999, published by Barnes and Noble Publishing. Mr. Korda, editor in chief of Simon & Schuster, researched bestseller lists from every year of the past century, devoting a chapter to his book for every decade. The author began with the Bookman bestseller from the turn of the century through 1912 then continued with the Publisher Weekly bestseller list until 1999. Mr. Korda asserts that the books on the bestseller lists serve as representations of what was on America’s minds and what America was concerned about during each of those periods. The author also writes about the modern day business of bestseller lists and how television, newspapers, and other forms of media can affect and even shape a bestseller list. After the presentation the author answered questions from members of the audience. close
