The book is an account of thirteen women pilots who attempted to become America’s first female astronauts during the 1960s. They underwent secret testing at the Lovelace Foundation in New Mexico and passed the same battery of tests as the Mercury 7 astronauts but, according to Ms. Ackmann, the whole notion of American female astronauts was summarily dismissed by the “boys' club” at NASA and on Capitol Hill. The USSR sent its first woman into space in 1963; the United States did not follow for another twenty years. Ms. Ackmann details the careers of these thirteen women, some of whom sacrificed their jobs and their marriages for a chance to participate in America’s space race against the Soviet Union. During her presentation Ms. Ackmann read several excerpts from the book. After her presentation, she answered questions from members of the audience.
