Mr. Williams, Lt. Gen. Kelly and Admiral McConnell spoke to reporters in the Pentagon on events in the Persian Gulf war on the third day of the ground campaign by coalition forces against Iraqi forces in Iraq and Kuwait. Lt. Gen. Kelly enumerated the statistics of the war, including 55 U.S. casualties since the beginning of hostilities in January. Lt. Gen. Kelly estimated the number of Iraqi P.O.W.'s to be over 30,000. Admiral McConnell explained oil well fires begun by Iraqi forces in Kuwait with the use of diagrams and pictures. The burning oil wells had created a huge cloud of smoke over Kuwait creating a significant obfuscation of ground targets for military warplanes. close
