Ms. Sobel talked about her book, Letters to Father: Suor Maria Celeste to Galileo, 1623-1633 with Bookmark, published by Walker and Company. The book follows up her earlier book, Galileo’s Daughter, and contains the original 124 existing letters written by Maria to her father Galileo. They are presented in their original form, annotated and translated by Ms. Sobel. Maria wrote them from the Florentine convent that she was placed in by her father when she was thirteen. The letters also describe Italy and the times she lived through including the Thirty Years War and the bubonic plague. After her presentation Ms. Sobel answered questions.

Ms. Sobel is the author of Galileo’s Daughter: A Historical Memoir of Science, Faith, and Love, the story of Maria Celeste, the eldest daughter of the three illegitimate children belonging to Italian inventor Galileo Galilee. close
