Senators investigated by the Senate Ethics Committee for their conduct in the Lincoln Savings and Loan scandal spoke to reporters on the Ethics Committee’s findings released earlier in the day. The Ethics Committee recommended that Senator Alan Cranston’s case be put before the full Senate, and reprimanded the other four senators for their questionable conduct in the affair. Sen. McCain said he felt vindicated by the Ethics Committee’s report, despite their reprimand for his behavior. Sen. Riegle accepted the committee’s reprimand for appearing to engage in unethical behavior, but stressed that he was not found guilty of misconduct. He went on to promote campaign reform and promise that he would not participate in behavior that appeared to be unethical. Sen. DeConcini said he was “relieved” to be exonerated of actual misconduct by the committee, and also accepted the fact that his “aggressiveness” was a contributing factor to the appearance of misconduct.
