Author Linda Rabben talked about her book Fierce Legion of Friends, published by the Quixote Center. The book recounts the three hundred-year history of human rights campaigns. Ms. Rabben relates the development of the campaigns, known as “causes celebre” from the 18th century anti-genocide movement in Africa, to the antislavery, labor and women’s movements of the 19th and 20th centuries. According to Ms. Rabben, the first activists wrote letters, signed petitions, demonstrated and lobbied for their causes. Human rights campaigners presently use these same strategies. “Fierce Legion of Friends” was published in conjunction with the fortieth anniversary of Amnesty International. close
