In the first presidential press conference following the U.S. victory in the Persian Gulf war, President George H.W. Bush announced that coalition forces and Iraqi military leaders would meet during the upcoming weekend to discuss the details of the cease-fire in the Persian Gulf war. The president also promised to move quickly to create a viable means to solve the problems in the Middle East, saying the best prospects for a diplomatic solution in decades were at hand. President Bush also vowed that no American taxpayer’s money would go toward the reconstruction of Iraq. He said he was only just beginning to feel the joy Americans were feeling at the end of hostilities, and looked forward to putting military operations to rest and get on with diplomatic means to progress in the Middle East. close
